The plan to lower False River’s water levels to improve the decaying lake’s water quality has been postponed indefinitely, state officials said.

Robert Barham, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, said he chose to cancel the drawdown pending the completion of an ongoing study being done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On Thursday, Barham called the plan to temporarily lower the oxbow lake’s water levels by up to 6 feet between Labor Day and January a short-term fix that would have to be repeated every few years.

Instead, Barham said, the LDWF intends to wait on the corps to finish its study to come up with a permanent fix for the lake’s declining water quality.

New Roads Mayor Tommy Nelson has gone on the offensive, charging the federal government specifically targeted him and other black elected officials in its two-year investigation into the Cifer 5000 garbage cleaning service.

In a motion filed this week in U.S. District Court in Baton Rouge, Nelson further questions why the government resorted to having an exotic dancer proposition him with offers of sex and oral sex in a New Orleans strip club as part of its investigation, offers that he says he turned down.

Nelson also asked a U.S. District Court judge to order prosecutors to turn over documents and names of any government agents and informants who participated in the investigation.

Nelson, White Castle Mayor Maurice “Big Moe” Brown and his brother, White Castle Police Chief Mario D. Brown, all of whom are black, were indicted July 7 on federal racketeering and bribery charges.

A fourth defendant, former Port Allen City Councilman Johnny Johnson, who is also black, pleaded guilty July 23 to bribery and racketeering charges.

Prosecutors allege the four men accepted gifts in exchange for political favors.

Nelson specifically was charged with accepting $20,000 in cash, meals, luxury hotel rooms and tickets to sporting events in a trade-off arrangement calling for him to help unnamed Cifer 5000 businesspeople secure private and federal funding for the venture.

2010 FALSE RIVER 4th OF JULY BOAT PARADE

The 28th Annual False River 4th of July Boat Parade will be held Sunday, July 4, 2010. Official judging of decorated watercraft and party barges will begin at 12:00 (noon) on south side of False River by Marc Barker’s Family & Friends at the Barker’s two story, octagon shaped pier. Barker’s family pier is located in Jarreau on the Island side of False River near the Pointe Placid Condos. Boat parade participants are asked to circle in front of the Barker’s pier during judging. Judging of decorated piers will be at 11:30 a.m. The Boat Parade will begin at 1:00 p.m., after judging, in front of LA Express Boat Landing and Pointe Placide Condos and run along south end of False River for several miles. The boat parade is open to public with no entry fees or registration. Boat parade spectator viewing is available from private camps along parade route or from watercraft and party barges.

Something new for 2010 announced by Marc Barker, “We have been asked by boat parade spectators with camps on LA Hwy. 1 side of False River (directly across False River from Island side boat parade judging and parade route) for parade participants to also please loop around and pass by camps on LA Hwy. 1 side of False River. This request is optional for boat parade participants. The Best Decorated Pier Trophy will also be judged and awarded to top participant along both the Island side and LA Hwy. 1 side of False River’s south end.”

The 2010 theme of the False River 4th of July Boat Parade is:

WHAT DOES “BP” MEAN TO YOU???

BP’s oil spill, currently spewing millions of gallons of oil from the Deepwater Horizon Rig blowout into the Gulf of Mexico, is resulting in tremendous public outcry over the loss of life, fish, wildlife as well as the negative impact to the marshes, environment, coastal communities and families. Boat parade participants can express their frustration creatively by decorating watercraft, party barges, and piers with what “BP” means to them: Big Problem, British Polluters, or ??????? (You Decide).

Trophies will be awarded for “Best Decorated Party Barge”, “Admiral’s Trophy”, “Founder’s Trophy”, “Shoulda Gotta Trophy”, “Best Decorated Small Craft”, and “Best Decorated Pier”. Louisiana State Representative Major Thibaut, representing District 18, will be special guest judge for boat parade.

Lionel Kleinpeter began the False River 4th of July Boat Parade twenty eight years ago with only a few watercraft participating and “passed the torch” in 2004 to the Barkers. Kleinpeter will be on hand to personally judge and award his “Founder’s Trophy”.

The Barkers remind all participants and spectators that the use of slingshots to toss or throw water balloons or other objects is strictly prohibited by Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department. Throwing water balloons recklessly is discouraged and the Barkers request that boat parade participants and spectators wear life vest as well as use restraint and common safety sense to avoid injury. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department and Pointe Coupee Sheriff Beauregard “Bud” Torres will be providing water patrols at boat parade for safety and assistance.

Parade Captain and Coordinator is Branden Barker. Branden can be reached at mobile no. 225-202-1041 if additional information is needed. Find additional info and updates on Facebook by searching: False River Fourth of July Boat Parade.

I noticed some new construction the other day and it really bit my curiosity. Well here it is. Modular homes on the River! I took a few peeks inside and they are indeed each their own self contained unit. By my guesses it looks about 800 sq ft each with 1 bedroom. I must say the inside looked very high end but I could get enough light to snap pictures of them inside.

And check the roof of the grey one. Solar Panels!!

PS. A nice large aluminum looking pier.

If you have driven down Island Road any time soon you know just how bad it is. It has almost got to the point where I drive more-so in the middle of the road in areas where it gets so bad. I have also been hearing more complaints from residents that have to drive down this road on a daily basis.

The next question that must be asked is do you want a full repave with asphalt or would you rather tear up the current road and start from scratch again. Obviously one is much more costly but will last much longer. Also I would assume they may close down a few parts of the road during construction.

In the end I am no DOT expert just a concerned citizen trying to start a discussion.
